Spiced rum with a story

An old family tradition, bottled.

Panjab has a long tradition of cane spirit and spice, and the spice box in every Panjabi kitchen is the other half of the story. Dilay 1949 comes from that world.

Cardamom for the chai, ginger and black pepper for the warmth, chilli for the finish.

Most spiced rum leans on vanilla and sugar. This one leans on the spices a Panjabi family actually cooks with.

Dilay 1949 started on Shev's 40th birthday. Shev decided to bring an old family tradition from Panjab to friends and family in the UK. They loved it, and that is where the bottle began.

Panjabi spiced rum

Drink a spiced rum that tastes like cardamom, not sweetener

One sip tells you this is not the usual bottle on the back bar. The cardamom lifts first, like chai. The warmth builds after.

  • Three layers, in order. Cardamom opens, ginger and black pepper carry it, chilli arrives last.
  • Fed up with spiced rum that all tastes the same? This one is built on the spice box of Panjab, not the vanilla aisle.
  • Bust a myth: spiced rum does not have to be sweet to taste good.
  • Spice with a gentle heat that lingers. A bit of fire, never a burn.

“I found it refreshing to find a spiced rum that feels unique rather than just another vanilla-heavy blend.”

Tasting notes

Three spices. One slow reveal.

I

Cardamom leads

Fragrant and lifted. Like chai, unmistakably the spice box of Panjab.

II

Warming backbone

Ginger and black pepper give a savoury, warming spine, the heart of a Panjabi kitchen.

III

Chilli on the finish

A gentle chilli warmth comes through last, true to how Panjab eats.

Smooth spiced rum

A smooth spiced rum you can sip neat

Spice usually means a harsh edge. Here the heat sits low and the finish stays smooth, so the bottle gets passed around the table.

  • Beautifully smooth. That is a customer's word, not ours.
  • Beautifully smooth, with a gentle spice warmth that arrives after the first sip, not before it.
  • Made to be tasted. Sip it neat, over ice, or long with ginger ale and lime.

How to drink spiced rum

One bottle, three ways to pour it

No cocktail kit. No syrups. If you can pour a drink, you can make a good one.

Neat

Let the spice unfold with a simple pour at room temperature.

Over ice

One large ice cube for a slowly changing sip.

Ginger ale

Plenty of ice, top with ginger ale, finish with fresh lime.

“Neat over ice, or mixed with coke and ice, makes for a refreshing long drink.”

Spiced rum compared

Dilay 1949 vs the usual spiced rum

Why £40

It is not trying to be the cheapest bottle on the shelf.

The same money buys a spiced rum built on cardamom, ginger, black pepper and chilli, with a Panjabi story behind it. People call it “beautifully smooth” and “unique”. That is what the £40 is for.

It is made in small batches, with a warming flavour profile you will not find in a vanilla-heavy bottle.

Customer reviews

What taste testers say

“Finally got to try Dilay! First sip was just so warming. You can taste the cardamom and ginger with a hint of chilli in the background. I had mine with ice and cola and was very pleasantly surprised how gentle it was and no note was overpowering to each other or the rum flavour itself. All blended so well. My Punjabi father-in-law approved too so that’s great considering he’s a whiskey drinker! Neat he wasn’t a fan but with cola he liked it and lemonade. My husband loved it and said i need to place an order for a full size bottle for our drinks collection!”
